Martial arts classes on tap

Smoky Bay Learning Center is currently signing up kids and adults for its martial arts classes that begin Sept. 3.

Classes in judo, aikido and karate are available. Call 235-8678 or e-mail to register.

Triathlon coming up

With a Tuesday deadline, time is running out for those who want to race in the Homer Mariner Triathlon on Aug. 31.

The race is limited to the first 200 entrants, and no teams are allowed. Racers will face a 1,000-yard swim, a 15-mile bike and a 5-mile run.

The race is a fund-raiser for the Homer High School swimming team. Entry is $25.

Alice Witte Challenge

The Homer High School volleyball team will host a two-day community tournament capped off by the Alice Witte Challenge.

The event, which pits various teams of community members against the Mariner spikers, is a fund-raiser for the volleyball team and begins the afternoon of Aug. 30.

The Alice Witte Challenge, set for Saturday, Aug. 31, brings together a team of Mariner alumni and others to take on the Homer varsity squad. The alumni are invited and encouraged to come practice with the Mariners today and again on Aug. 30.
