Native gathering is soon

Tamamta Katurlluta, the Pratt Museum's biennial Gathering of Native Tradition, will be held next weekend, Aug. 29-31. The gathering begins with a welcome reception 5 p.m. Aug. 29 and includes the traditional vessel landing ceremony at the Homer Spit at 10 a.m. Aug. 30. Other events include a performance by Athabascan singer and drummer George Holly, a Native Youth Olympics skills demonstration, an elder's circle on climate change, Alutiiq baseball and an evening of dance and culture 7 p.m. Sunday at the Mariner Theatre featuring the Tagiugmiut Dancers from Barrow. Tamamta Katurlluta brings together Alaska Native communities from Kachemak Bay, lower Cook Inlet and other parts of Alaska. The villages of Nanwalek, Port Graham, Seldovia and Kenai are the hosts of the weekend with the museum.
