Weeks of hard work propelled the Mariner men to victory on their home turf at the season's first high school football game last Saturday.

A hearty crowd waited just 13 seconds into the game with the Valdez Buccaneers before Homer senior Dyllan Day brought the ball to the end zone on an 82-yard kick return. Day went on to score two more touchdowns in the first quarter, which added up to 24 points with successful kicks from David Wright, Frank Hoss and Robin Glosser.

Even as they rotated through the roster, the Ms remained a force to be reckoned with on the field, scoring 14 points in the second on two long passes and 16 in the third on short runs.

More than 50 players make up the 2011 Mariner football brotherhood, headed once again by Coach Cam Wyatt and a crew of experienced assistants.

"He's got a great team," Valdez Head Coach Lea Cockerham said of Wyatt. "Speed kills and boy he's got it. He's got a lot of fast runners over there we just couldn't match up. Even if we were in the right position they were able to get around us."

The game ended 54-14.

The Ms will test their prowess against Southeast opponents this week, today at Thunder Mountain in Juneau and Monday in Sitka. Their next home game and first conference game will be against Kodiak Sept. 3. Homecoming is set for Sept. 24 with Kenai.
