Farmer's Market

You need not be present to win. Although that may be the rule for the Homer Farmers' Market turkey dinner raffle, it applies to very little else at the market.

Of course, you have to be present to buy those fresh veggies and seafood, peruse the crafts, or sample the tasty food, but there also is a gamut of activities to catch as well.

This Saturday there will be another demonstration for the "Chef at the Market" series. Lori Jenkins will demonstrate how to make raspberry vinegar just in time for the berry picking season.

You can catch her at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. She will have homemade vinegars to taste test as well, some made from berries, some from herbs and some from flowers.

No day at the market would be complete without music, and no music more unexpected than that of the Homer Ukulele Society.

Well, last week we had African marimbas pounding in the morning and the gypsy tones of fiddle, accordion and bass in the afternoon, so I guess there is nothing too unique for the market music scene.

All that is required is that people get together, make music and have fun in the process.

Don't forget the Zany Zukes Fest that will be happening Aug. 25. Not only do you need to be present to win, you need to participate.

Do you have an enormous veggie growing in your garden that you would love to show off? Bring it in for the Big Veg contest. Start prepping your zucchini to win the Second Annual Zucchini Races. Or just dress like a veggie.

There are lots of options. Get ready to be where the edgy veggies are.

Since the Zany Zukes Fest will be the last Saturday of the month, Aug. 25 also will be Kids' Vending Day. Maybe your kid has the perfect zucchini bread recipe to sell?

No matter when you come to the market on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or on Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m., you can expect to be present for the unexpected.
