The Homer Brewing Co. Growlers finished second in the E league state softball tournament Sunday after falling 15-9 to Munsford Real Estate of Mat-Su at the De La Vega Fields in Anchorage.
The Growlers, who compiled an 8-2 record for the two-day tournament, knocked off Homer rival the Grog Shop 4-2 to earn the right to play in the championship. There were 26 teams vying for the title of Alaska's best E league softball team.
Growler Tanya Norris was named female golden glove for third base.
In other state softball action, the E-league Duggan's Pub Fugitives and D-league Point West Video each were bounced from tournament contention after two games. Meanwhile the C-league Homer Medical Clinic Nads finished 1-2 in their tourney.
Bowler off to Ireland
Homer bowler Howard Bonfiglio has been selected to represent Team Alaska in the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland.
Bonfiglio will join 22 other Alaskans for the event, which is scheduled to be held June 20-29.
Tourney begins today
The Homer Lynx Golf Course will hold its Homer Open golf tournament starting today through Aug. 31.
The four-round tournament features a two-round play-in format with players to be flighted by their first two rounds, to be played by Aug. 22. The final two rounds will determine the championship.
