Schools set to open

Homer public schools begin soon.

Students are reminded that immunizations are required before the first day of school.

Vaccinations and immunizations are available at the Homer Public Health Care center.

"Locally, we're currently completely stocked," said Bonnie Betley, Public Health nurse. "We have all the vaccines and immunizations students need for school."

Betley said that last year there was a statewide shortage of the tetanus diphtheria immunization, but the state waived the requirement until the 2003-2004 school year.

"We have the vaccine this year, but students aren't required to have it until next year, so we have some time to catch up," she said. "People can go ahead and get their kids vaccinated for it this year in preparation."

The first day of classes for all Homer area public schools is scheduled for Aug. 21 for all grades except kindergarten, which begins Aug. 25.

Class supply lists, parent and student handbooks and school lunch menus can all be found on the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Web site at

Homer area schools had some administrative turnover this summer, and when schools begin there will be some new faces at the helm, said district Recruitment Specialist Debbie Stewart.

Former Homer High School teacher Dick Sander will take the reins of Chapman School, while Joseph Huftel, of Rice Lake, Wisc., will replace Bev Gillispie as assistant principal at Homer High School.

Benny Abraham, from Searcy, Ark., is the new principal of Paul Banks Elementary School, and Charlie Walsworth, who taught in the Fairbanks area last year, will be the new principal at West Homer Elementary School.

Darrell Johnston, from Shageluk in the Iditarod School District, is the new principal/teacher at the Port Graham School, and Sharon Conley, who worked last year in the Homer area, will be the new principal/teacher at Razdolna.

Student registration for Homer High School will be held today from 9 a.m. to noon for seniors, and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for juniors; and from 9 a.m. to noon for sophomores, and 1 to 3:30 p.m. for freshman on Monday, Aug. 19.

Student photos will also be taken at this time. Parents are asked to bring money for photo packets.

Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m.
