Obituary

Homer resident Robert Daniel "Bob" Hand, 61, died of a sudden heart attack on Saturday, Aug. 3, at South Peninsula Hospital.

A memorial service will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Anchor River Inn. His many friends will be honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Hand was born Sept. 5, 1940, in Ashford, Wash. He graduated from Franklin Pierce High School in 1958.

He moved to Alaska in 1978, living on Prince of Wales Island. He moved to Troy, Mont., in 1980 and lived there until returning to Prince of Wales Island in 1986. Mr. Hand lived on Prince of Wales Island until moving to Homer in 1995. A year later he moved to Delta Junction, only to return again to Homer in 1997. Mr. Hand was the owner/operator of his own truck-driving business.

Mr. Hand was a non-denominational Protestant and was a member of the Troy Montana Volunteer Fire Department from 1980-1986.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, time with friends, driving his new Peterbilt and playing a good game of cribbage.

His family said, "As a young man, he rode bareback broncs. Bob had a zest for life. He loved the outdoors and found it best shared with friends."

Mr. Hand is survived by his wife, Patricia Hand of Homer; his mother, Trudy Winters; sisters, LaFaye Napora of Eatonville, Wash., Darlene Cheeseman and Shirley Mertz both of Puyallup, Wash., and Sharon Davis of Tacoma, Wash.; children, Gerri and Chris Kern of North Pole, Jacque Nickerson and Terry Quantrille of North Pole and Russ Fox of Tacoma, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Homer Volunteer Fire Department, In memory of Robert "Bob" Hand, 604 E. Pioneer Ave., Homer 99603.
