Smallpond Childcare expands program

Already providing care for children age three and younger, Smallpond Childcare is now opening licensed preschool and after-school programs. To accommodate the expansion, owner Susannah Webster is opening a second location next door to the current facility at 4136 Hohe.

An open house is planned for this Saturday, from 3-5 p.m. and the public is invited.

The preschool program is for children ages 3-5, with after-school care for children up to the age of 12. Smallpond opened in March 2011.

"We strive to provide a warm and gentle environment for small children to explore and play," said Webster.

"We believe that the best kind of learning happens when children are involved in the rhythms of the day and are given plenty of opportunities for ownership of their activities. Our days are filled with laughter, singing, bread baking, dancing, outside exploration, painting, play-dough, dress up, and books, lots and lots of books."

The preschool program, which is already full, is heavily influenced by the educational philosophy of Fireweed Academy, emphasizing theme immersion, authentic experiences and integrates arts, said Webster.

The program for school-aged youngsters is created to "meet the needs of working families looking for high quality childcare."
