A halibut pushing the scales to more than 300 pounds wrangled itself into second place in the 2011 Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby last Thursday. Angela Kline — now Krzykowski — of Anchorage reeled in a 310.6-pound barndoor on a honeymoon trip with new husband Ryan Kryzkowski while fishing with Capt. Ben Martin of North Country Halibut Charters aboard the Fringe Benefit. Krzykowski had already caught a 130-pound halibut when she hooked her bigger fish in 80 feet of water off English Bay. Martin said it took 40 minutes to land the fish. Although Martin's client, Jamie Olvera of Fairbanks, won the 2010 derby with a 288.6-pound halibut, this was the first more than 300-pound halibut an angler guided by Martin caught.

There's no arguing that's a big fish, but not big enough to push Chad Aldridge of Sterling out of the top spot with his 350.8-pound halibut caught June 19 aboard his boat, the Seabee.

Only derby ticket holders qualify for prizes. Tickets are $10 per day or $75 for a 10-day ticket. They can be purchased at the Homer Chamber of Commerce or many local businesses.

Derby Coordinator Paula Frisinger said she will have a list of top fish for July next week. Until then, the big fish for that month were:
