Kids' Fishing Day

Part of the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon will open for fishing only to anglers age 15 and younger 12:01 a.m.-11:59 p.m. Saturday. The youth-only sport fishing area will be posted. The remainder of the Fishing Lagoon will be open for fishing to anglers of all ages. All other sport fishing regulations remain in effect for the Fishing Lagoon and are found on page 14 of the 2011 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulations Summary Booklet.

The Mobile Aquatic Classroom and Alaska Department of Fish and Game staff will be present at the Fishing Lagoon from 5-8 p.m.

Staff will be available to help young anglers gear up and fish for coho salmon returning to the lagoon. Fishing rods will be available for kids to check out and use at the lagoon. The best chance to hook silvers starts at 5:30 p.m. as the tide flows into the lagoon. Other scheduled activities include how to identify all species of salmon and local clams, tying egg loops and fishing knots and learning the best way for releasing fish.

Free loaner spinning rods are available to all anglers for up to a week through the Homer Fishing Rod Lender Program. Fishing rods can be checked out at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center or the Homer Alaska Department of Fish and Game Office. The last Youth Fishing Day at the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon in 2011 will be Aug. 20.
