Chamber sponsors candidate debates

The Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center will sponsor two debates for Republican Party candidates for Senate District O and House District 30.

At 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Kachemak Community Center, Alaska Senate District O candidates Peter Micciche and Tom Wagoner will debate. Wagoner, of Kenai, was senator for District Q, and under redistricting is now standing for election in the new Senate District O, which includes the central and lower Kenai Peninsula. Micciche is mayor of Soldotna.

At 7 p.m. Aug. 22, also at Kachemak Community Center, Paul Seaton and Jon Faulkner, both of Homer, will debate. Seaton was representative for District 35 and under redistricting stands for election in District 30, which includes Seldovia, Homer, Anchor Point, and now Ninilchik and Kasilof. Faulkner is the owner of Land's End Acquistion Corp., including Land's End Resort, Kenai Landing and the Van Gilder Hotel, Seward.

"We are pleased and proud to present these 'question and answer' debates so that our members and the communities of the southern Kenai Peninsula have the opportunity to accurately assess the candidates and their positions on business-related issues," said Monte Davis, executive director of the Homer Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. "We have formed a small task force and are polling our members in advance of the debates to come up with a series of questions our members would like answers to before casting their votes."

Candidates for nominations by their parties will be voted on in the Aug. 28 primary, which also includes votes on two ballot questions. There is no Democratic Party candidate for Senate District 0. Democrat Liz Diament of Fritz Creek faces the winner of the Republican Party nomination in District 30.
