Wayne's World wins Realtors' golf scramble for charity

Team Wayne's World won the Kachemak Classic golf scramble last Saturday at the Fireweed Meadows Golf Course in Anchor Point. Steve Rich, Jessica Marx, Travis Brown and Adam Triewiller hit 53 strokes over 18 holes on the par 54 course.

Gavin Blair, Robert Blair, Carol Cordes and Merlin Cordes, known that day as The Referees, hit par for the course for second place. The Birdies — Josh Fraley, Justin Adams, Scott Owen and Dave Drake — made 56 strokes.

Four other teams joined the action, two of them tying for last place with 61 strokes. One team enjoyed the sunny day by playing just nine holes. Nine Realtors golfed, including four from Kenai.

The four-man scramble, where all players on a team tee off together, then choose the best shot to continue from, is a golfing format common in charity events.

The Kachemak Board of Realtors sponsored the event and raised nearly $5,000 for Hospice of Homer, Homer Community Food Pantry and scholarships. Kachemak Board of Realtors president Sharon Minsch said it made sense to the board to help support the important local charities.

"They just seemed like good choices for Realtors to help. They cross all economic lines," she said.

Minsch said it was fun to try another fundraiser besides the holiday auction the board traditionally holds in December.

"We're just trying to get more people involved supporting the community," she said.

She was pleased with the sponsorship and support of a variety of area residents and businesses, both young and old, experienced and not, locals and visitors.
