The leading anglers in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby — both the overall front-runner and the top three leaders for the month of July — can breathe easy for another week, with only minor changes in the prize line-up.

Chad Aldridge of Sterling continues to have the biggest halibut caught since the derby began May 1. He landed a 350.8-pound monster June 19 while fishing on his own boat, the Seabee.

Although they didn't hook into large halibut, two anglers are smiling this week after catching tagged halibut. Troy Witherington of Eagle River is $1,000 richer. He reeled in a tagged halibut July 16 sponsored by Collins Excavation and Services. Ernest Garcia of Albuquerque, N.M., has $500 in his pocket, thanks to the tagged fish he caught July 13 that was sponsored by Tacklebuster Charters.

Homer has a two-halibut limit per day, per person. Only anglers who purchased derby tickets prior to fishing will qualify for prizes. The tickets are $10 a day or $75 for a 10-day ticket. They can be purchased at the Homer Chamber of Commerce and many local businesses.
