Sport physical clinic

Physical exams will be offered to high school students at the Sports Physical Clinic on July 21, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at Homer Medical Center. No appointments are offered, however, students are asked to stagger arrival according to the following schedule: 8 a.m., last names beginning with A-E; 9 a.m., last names beginning with F-J; 10 a.m., last names beginning with K-O; 11 a.m., last names beginning with P-T; noon, last names beginning with U-Z.

The Alaska School Activities Association requires a physical screening for high school students participating in sports and activities. Community health care providers are volunteering their time to provide the exams. This is a fundraiser for the local booster club; therefore, a $10 donation is requested, made payable to the Booster Club. No one will be turned away for lack of money.

To speed the process, parents are asked to complete page one of the two-page exam form prior to presenting at the clinic. This will save time and improve service at the event. The form can be found at www.sphosp.org or call 235-0397 to have a form faxed or mailed. All students must bring or wear loose fitting shorts for the screening.

These screenings were started to look for signs or symptoms of certain risks that students might face in their participation in certain activities. The purpose is to screen the students and refer them for any additional evaluation, if needed, prior to participating in that activity.

The event is coordinated by South Peninsula Hospital, Homer Medical Center, Homer High School and local health care providers. If you have questions about this event, contact Derotha Ferraro at South Peninsula Hospital at 235-0397.
