Powering up

James Daggett, left, and Dan Haakenson of Alaskan Wind Industries, raise a Skystream wind turbine at the Diamond Ridge home of Deb Nakada and Michael Limacher last Friday. Nakada and Limacher made a gala affair of the event and named the wind turbine "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" after the Beatles song, and toasted the turbine's raising. Nakada, a commercial fisherman, said she used part of her Exxon Valdez oil spill settlement to pay for the wind turbine.

"This is my way of taking money and giving back to the environment, to the planet," Nakada said. "It's not a revenge thing. It's redemption." Nadia Daggett, who owns Alaskan Wind Industries with her husband, James, said the Nakada-Limacher wind turbine is the fourth in Homer to be connected by Homer Electric Association to its grid, and the first to be installed in Homer by Alaskan Wind Industries. A second Skystream on Diamond Ridge was put up by the homeowner.
