Share the Spirit, quilters helping condo fire victims

Share the Spirit has set up a fund and is collecting money for the families displaced by the June 27 Landings Condominium fire. Volunteers collected money during the Homer Fourth of July parade. Donation buckets also have been set up around town at Homer businesses.

Share the Spirit director Shari Daugherty said the need varies for families displaced by the fire. Share the Spirit has contacted the families, she said. Funds collected will be used for needs such as deposits on new rentals.

"We'll dispense whatever funds we've collected through the end of the month and will equitably help out," Daugherty said.

Businesses wanting to set up donation buckets can contact Share the Spirit at 235-7466 and leave a message. Donations also can be made to the Share the Spirit fund at Wells Fargo bank.

The Kachemak Bay Quilters have donated 14 quilts to the families. One woman going through cancer treatment whose apartment survived the fire also will be given a small lap quilt.

Through its "Scraps of Comfort" program, the 20 women members of the group make quilts throughout the year and keep a supply on hand to give to people who suffer tragedies like fires.

"My heart went out to everybody," said Alice Krivitsky with the Kachemak Bay Quilters. "This is such a wonderful community that stands up and helps everybody."

Homer Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bob Painter said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
