Lloyd Schade seeks grazing leases on thousands of acres of land northeast of Homer where he hopes to create a profitable business raising reindeer, possibly imported from Russia.
The $20 million visitors' center, the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge plans to build by Beluga Slough will be good for marine education, said people attending a public hearing on the project last week. But, they added, management is needed to keep increasing numbers of visitors from destroying Homer beaches.
