Volunteer firefighters deserve praise, not criticism, for helping others

To the woman standing next to me at the car wash as the Landings Street fire burned: You should be ashamed of yourself. You turned to the women between us and made a comment about how slow the firefighters were moving.

Those men and women down there were volunteers. They break away from their families and jobs to go help total strangers. They care enough about people like you to volunteer their time and risk their lives. You probably couldnt lift the amount of weight they are carrying on their backs when they go to fight a fire. They are taught to approach cautiously because their lives are important also.

I am lucky enough to be married to one of those brave, selfless men that was there that day. I am proud of each and every man and woman that was there helping. You should be thanking them for their service, instead of criticizing them. What would you do if it was your house on fire and none of them dropped what they were doing to respond?
