First Friday openings top Fourth of July with a bang

With the Fourth of July falling not just on Friday, but the first Friday of the month, Independence Day celebrants can continue the festivities by visiting art openings on Pioneer Avenue and in Old Town. Local artists dominate this month's shows.

The collaborations of husband-wife artists also can be seen with Ron and Turid Senungetuk's show at Bunnell Street Arts Center and Dave and Caryl Christy's fused-glass work at Ptarmigan Arts.

While waiting for the Fourth of July parade or waiting for traffic to clear afterward, visit Pioneer Avenue galleries. Don't forget shows in Bunnell Street Arts Center and Ring of Fire Meadery in Old Town.

Art continues on Saturday with the Homer Artisans Showcase at Timeless Toys from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Next Friday, longtime Homer artist and teacher Karla Freeman has a solo show at the Homer Council on the Arts.

Paintings by Ed Tussey

Homer artist Ed Tussey presents new originals. Tussey is known for his detailed and intimate paintings of wildlife and panoramic landscapes. He also will be on hand to sign prints.

Bunnell Street Arts Center

First Friday Opening Reception, 6-8 p.m., Artists' Talk, 6:30 p.m.

"Old Traditions, New Traditions," art in wood by Ron Senungetuk and jewelry by Turid Senungetuk

Homer and former Fairbanks artists Ron and Turid Senungetuk present a collaborative show of their work. See related story, this page.

First Friday, 8 p.m.

The Homer Film Society and Bunnell Street Arts Center show avant garde and independent films for Independence Day. This Friday's films include "Marquette Park I & II," a documentary on the American Nazi Party by Tom Palazollo and Mark Rance; "Every Saturday Evening," by Craig Sommers, a documentary on professional wrestling; and "Exquisite Corpse," by the Homer Film Society. Due to language and content, "Marquette Park" is not recommended for younger audiences.

"Alaska: My Soul Food," monotype paintings by Jan Peyton

"New Work," by ceramic artist Michael Anderson

Homer artist Jan Peyton presents monotype paintings a paper print of a painting done in reverse on Plexiglas in this show she dedicates to her mentors, Halibut Cove artist Marian Beck and the late Alex Combs. Peyton explores the look, spirit and beauty surrounding Homer.

Peyton demonstrates monotype printing and watercolor painting for the Fireweed Gallery's Meet the Art series from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Cordova artist Michael Anderson shows functional stonework with sea motifs, including bowls, jars, casserole dishes and other serving pieces. Anderson's tile art also can be seen at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center.

Watercolor paintings by Ratindra Das

Chicago area artist Ratindra Das presents his bold, colorful watercolor paintings. Das won't be able to make the First Friday opening, but Picture Alaska owner Lynda Reed said she will show a DVD of him demonstrating his watercolor techniques.

East Pioneer Avenue

5-7:30 p.m., First Friday reception.

"Glass Inspirations," fused glass art Dave and Caryl Christy

Dave and Caryl Christy's work reflects the environment in colors called from the forest and the glassy translucent waters of Kachemak Bay.

"As artists we love to draw on the rich marine life of our area. We are intrigued by the transmission and reflection of light that surrounds us in the waters of the Bay and by the same play of light in fused glass," they said in an artists' statement.

Ring of Fire Meadery

Old Town, Bunnell Avenue

5-7 p.m., First Friday reception.

"LavArt" photographs by G. Brad Lewis

Photographer G. Brad Lewis shows volcano photographs from his "LavArt" series of images. Internationally recognized as a leading volcano and nature photographer, his volcano pictures have appeared on the cover of many magazines, including Life, Natural History, Photographer's Forum, and Geo.

""The goal of my photography is to connect the viewer to a deep understanding and appreciation of the natural world," he said in his artist's statement. "In my LavArt series of images, I utilize the movement, light and texture of the world's most active volcano to open human emotions to the pulse the planet."

Homer Artisans Showcase <P> Timeless Toys, Main Street

Saturday, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Homer's eclectic artisans thrilled cruise ships passengers in early May at a showcase and return this weekend for a festival on Saturday at Timeless Toys.

Paintings by Karla Freeman

5-7 p.m., Second Friday reception, July 11

Longtime Homer artist and Kachemak Bay Campus art professor Karla Freeman presents her work next Friday at the Homer Council on the Arts. The gallery is closed this Friday for the Fourth of July.
