Occupying 2,000 square feet of the building's left side since opening Jan. 2, owner Dwight Persinger said the expansion offers an additional 3,000 square feet.
The first phase will be to expand the furniture department during the month of July to fill the entire space currently occupied by Consignment World. Next, Persinger plans to dedicate the center of the building to collectibles, antiques and jewelry.
Organizing an area for childrens' clothing, outdoor wear and sports gear follows, with the remaining 1,000 square feet on the building's right side to become an area for used car, RV and boat sales and consignment. The intent is to keep that part small, perhaps four to five used cars and boats. Once the parking area in front of the building is paved, Persinger sees it as the perfect spot to display the automobile and boat inventory.
When it comes to location, the former Nevada businessman couldn't be happier. Not only does Consignment World border the Sterling Highway at the entrance to town, it also is directly across the street from Homer Middle School.
"Traffic slows down to 20 mph nine months of the year," he said, smiling.
If everything goes as planned, the remodel effort should be completed in the next few months.
With his first winter a thing of the past and the business running in the black, Persinger is now discovering what impact tourist season has on Consignment World.
"With five weeks into the tourist season, only 5 percent is tourists. That's great," he said of the local-based interest Consignment World has generated.
