Wind — not clear or cloudy skies — make regatta a success

Weekend weather included both hot sunshine and dark clouds, but it was the wind that mattered most to eight captains and their crews competing in the annual Homer Yacht Club Land's End Regatta held Saturday and Sunday.

"They were very good races both days, but Sunday was a better race day than Saturday because the winds were steadier," said Lee Dewees, commodore of the Homer Yacht Club and captain of Alandra's Lee.

A total of 10 boats participated in the regatta, but only eight participated both days.

While the racing was done on the water, the regatta wrapped up on land Sunday with an awards dinner and auction of items donated by local businesses.

"We've had good support from the Homer community in terms of sponsorships and donations," said Dewees. "We're very appreciative of that."

With the course for each day's race visible from tip of the Spit, spectators were able to enjoy front-row seats on the action.

"It was exciting and close racing and it also seemed like, particularly on Saturday, we had a lot of public out there to watch us conduct the race," said Dewees. "This is our signature event. It was fun and it was good."

Saturday's top three finishers of the eight boats crossing the finish line were Arctica with Capt. Craig Forrest in first place, Nereus with Capt. Erik Pullman in second place and Stella with Capt. Willie Condon in third place.

On Sunday, Nereus nosed into first, Stella moved into second and the Martha J. with Capt. Carlin Rauch took third after being in fourth place on Saturday. In the 2011 regatta, Rauch took first place with the Martha J.

Final results for the 2012 Homer Yacht Club Land's End Regatta after combining the results from both days were:

• First place: Nereus, Capt. Erik Pullman;

• Second place: Stella, Capt. Willie Condon;

• Third place: Arctica, Capt. Craig Forrest;

• Fourth place: Martha J., Capt. Carlin Rauch;

• Fifth place: Winter Hawk, Capt. Shawn Hansen;

• Sixth place: Alandra's Lee, Capt. Lee Dewees;

• Seventh place: Duit, Capt. Mark Hemstreet;

• Eighth place: Trinity, Capt. Larry Adams.

The Homer Yacht Club's next scheduled race is July 7. For more information on club membership and events, visit www.homeryachtclub.org.
