A fire at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday heavily damaged the Landings Condominiums, a 17-unit complex on Landings Street across from the Homer News. All residents escaped the fire without injury. The fire did not spread to nearby buildings. At least one unit, an upstairs apartment where the fire started, was fully destroyed, with neighboring units possibly damaged. In the attached , firefighters from the Homer Volunteer Fire Department and Kachemak Emergency Services make the initial attack on the fire shortly after it started. Tankers from both departments responded, as did volunteer crews. Thick smoke rose from the west side and back of the complex, and could be seen from across Beluga Lake and in town. This is a developing story. At 6:30 p.m., crews still were battling the blaze and had not yet completely put it out. Michael Armstrong can be reached at michael.armstrong@homernews.com.
