HEA rates expected to decrease July 1

Homer Electric Association members should see a rate decrease beginning July 1.

HEA has submitted a filing with the Regulatory Commission of Alaska that lowers the Cost of Power Adjustment, or COPA, from $0.04997 per kilowatt hour to $0.03603 per kilowatt hour.

COPA reflects the cost of the fuel used to generate electricity purchased by HEA from Chugach Electric and is adjusted on a quarterly basis. The COPA revision will lower the blended rate (COPA plus energy rate) for HEA members from $0.17756 to $0.16362 per kilowatt hour. The new rate will mean a monthly savings of $8.78 for the average HEA member using 630 kilowatt hours a month.

Pending approval from the Regulatory Commission of Alaska, the new rate will be effective for all billings as of July 1.

Zak appointed examiner for 2012 quality award

Bryan Zak of the Alaska Small Business Development Center in Homer has been appointed by Dr. Patrick Gallagher, director of the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology, to the 2012 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

The award, created by public law in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. As an examiner, Zak is responsible for reviewing and evaluating award applications.

According to a press release issued by Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, the board is comprised of approximately 500 experts from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations, and nonprofits including government. All board members take part in a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award. The Baldrige Award may be given annually in each of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care and nonprofit. Awards have been presented to 90 organizations.

Recipients for 2011 were Concordia Publishing, St. Louis, Mo. (a nonprofit); Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, Mich. (health care); Schneck Medical Center, Seymour, Ind.
