Competitors gather for a friendly photo by the eighth basket after a round of disc golf last weekend at the Moose Pretzel in Homer.

The weather was great and the competition fierce at the 2011 Homer Disc Golf Championships, held last weekend at the Moose Pretzel Disc Golf course off East Skyline Drive. Players from Anchorage, Sterling and Kenai joined three local disc golfers to make a field of 17 competitors. Play began Saturday with two rounds of 18 holes and continued Sunday with one round of 18 and a final round of nine.

Finishing on top in the open division was Homer's Edan Badajos, shooting a total of 176, 14 strokes under par for the weekend. David Fielding of Anchorage took second in that division, shooting 179, 11 strokes under par. Sean Perkins, also of Anchorage, came in third with 186 for the weekend, 4 strokes under par.

Anchorage tossers swept the advanced division. Rod Stepp took first by shooting a weekend total of 202. Louie Orozco took second with 214 and Dale Williams claimed third with 218.

In the intermediate division, Eric Hepola of Anchorage took first, Andrew Jackson of Sterling took second and John Hallin of Anchorage took third.

The next tournament at the Moose Pretzel will be the Tall Grass Open on Sept. 10 and 11.

A work day will be held 1-6 p.m. on June 19 at Jack Gist Park, on Adams off East End Road, to prepare the park for a future disc golf course. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves and a pruning saw to enhance the existing recreational opportunities of the park.
