Calling all Democrats

Thanks to the Alaska Redistricting Board those of you who for years thought of yourselves as District 34 or 35 Democrats may no longer have that distinction. In fact District 33 and 34 dont even exist on the Kenai Peninsula anymore but now include a good portion of Southeast hello, Kenai, youre now in District 29.

The new districts that encompass the Kenai Peninsula are 28, 29, 30 and 36.

District 28 is the new home to Seward and includes Nikiski, Sterling and Cooper Landing while District 29 includes Kenai, Kalifornsky, Ridgeway and Soldotna.

District 35 now stretches from Kodiak to Yakutat and includes Cordova and Whittier.

Homer is now part of the new District 30 and stretches from Seldovia, around Kachemak Bay and north to Funny River. This area includes Fox River, Happy Valley, Ninilchik, Clam Gulch, Kasilof and everything in between.

Our friends and neighbors from Port Graham and Nanwalek now join the Alaska Peninsula with Tyonek, Iliamna, Dillingham, Naknek and Red Dog in District 36.

I encourage all of you to go to http://akredistricting.org to view the maps and lists of communities that are included in the new statewide political districts.

Along with all this gerrymandering comes the call for restructuring and we have a deadline. New officers must be elected by July 18 in order to comply with the State Central Committees motion to follow the new district lines 45 days after they are final. Although the redistricting plan has not yet received Department of Justice pre-clearance under the Voting Rights Act, our state is implementing the new lines for this election. It is time to reorganize and elect new district officers.

The current chair of District 35 Democrats is shouting out to all Democrats who will be part of the new District 30 Democrats to join this effort. Please contact Bob Burns, current chair of District 35 Democrats, at 299-6640 or Patti Boily, treasurer, at 235-7391 to provide input as to date, time and location of this vital meeting. The new group has to be registered with APOC by July 18.

Were sad to say goodbye to old friends but eager to meet new ones as were all in this together Alaskas future is at stake.

Patti Boily

Treasurer, District 35 Democrats
