In a recent editorial the Homer News paid tribute to those who have given their lives in defense of our country. I share these sentiments. However, I question the conclusion that "it is undeniable that the dismantling of the regime in Afghanistan has had a positive effect in curbing terrorism."
It is undeniable that we have pulverized thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan, but al-Qaida seems to remain in business, the flow of suicide bombers continues unabated and our leaders warn that another major terrorist assault in the U.S. is a virtual certainty. So how does the News conclude that we are making progress? What is the measure of success in this campaign? And how will we ever know when the job is finished?
