Homer High School's softball team played five games at the Cartee Fields in Anchorage last week to take second place in the state small schools tournament.

The Mariners were undefeated in the Northern Lights Conference and 15-9 for the season overall going into the tournament.

They lost their first game 10-5 against Ketchikan's Kings Friday afternoon before defeating the Mid-Alaska champion Eielson Ravens 13-7.

On Saturday morning the Ms knocked Soldotna Stars out of the tournament with a 11-7 victory.

The Mariners went on to beat the Kings 12-8 to advance to the championship game for the first time since 2007. The Ms won state in 2006.

The Sitka Wolves held Homer scoreless and earned five runs in the second inning and three in the third to take the title.

Ms Head Coach Bill Bell said the runners-up played strong with the state's top teams until the very end.

"Even against Sitka we were hitting nicely, we were just hitting it right to them," he said.

For the season, Bell was impressed with the Mariners' cohesiveness and motivation.

"We were pretty much standing back," he said of the coaches' role at the end of the season.

"I don't think I've ever had a team that was that supportive of each other. They were all in it together," he said.

To top off their accomplishment, the Ms earned the academic award for having the highest combined GPA (3.46) of small schools.

Hannah LaRue, Edrie Evarts and Monica Davis made the all-conference team.
