Moving into the second month of the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby, there are new names on the monthly winners' board at the Spit weigh-in station. Rich Pruzek of Chippewa Falls, Wis., continues to hold overall first place with a 176.5-pound whopper caught May 30 while fishing with Capt. Trenton Pack of Bob's Trophy Charters aboard the Tuff Stuff. Standings for the month of June are: • First place, $1,000: 134.6-pound halibut caught June 1 by Richard O'Reilly Jr. of San Diego, Calif., while fishing with Capt. Keith Kalke of Ocean Hunter Charters aboard the Ocean Hunter; • Second place, $750: 120.6-pound halibut caught June 1 by William Cornelson of Bakersfield, Calif., while fishing with Capt. Keith Kalke of Ocean Hunter Charters aboard the Ocean Hunter; • Third place, $500: 96.6-pound halibut caught June 1 by Chad Cornelson of Bakersfield, Calif., while fishing with Capt. Keith Kalke of Ocean Hunter Charters aboard the Ocean Hunter; • Fourth place, $250: 94.8-pound halibut caught June 5 by Jenny Bentley of Bright Victoria, Australia, while fishing with Capt. Scott Glosser of Captain Scott's Sportfishing aboard the Mako; • Lady Angler: Bentley; • Released fish: 2 for an overall total of 10; • Tagged fish: None for the month. Homer has a two-halibut limit per day, per person. Only derby ticket-holders qualify for prizes. Tickets are available at the Homer Chamber of Commerce and many local businesses.
