Laura Lou Todd

Longtime Homer resident, Laura Lou Todd, 66, died May 21, 2011, in the company of family at South Peninsula Hospital following a battle with cancer.

Laura was born to Carroll and Jewel Tedrick in El Reno, Okla. on Nov. 11, 1944. Laura graduated from Valley High School in Albuquerque, N.M. She went on to earn an associate degree in nursing from Bernalillo County Medical Center, also in Albuquerque. Laura loved horses and always dreamed of coming to Alaska. In 1976, she and her family moved to Anchorage, where she worked for Providence Hospital. She permanently moved to Homer the following year. In Homer, she worked as a nurse for the South Peninsula Hospital, where she helped bring the Home Health Care Program to the community. Prior to her illness, she worked for many years as a nurse for Dr. Paul Sayer, MD.

Laura enjoyed reading and gardening. She also loved quilting and sewing, and at one time sold her creations at various shops around Homer under the label "Todd Toys." Laura was always there to lend a helping hand, and provided respite and foster care for special needs children for more than a decade. Laura was a strong person and never gave in to adversity, but also was very patient, loving and kind. She was a wonderful mother. She had an infectious smile and could always put others at ease.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents and her firstborn infant son.

She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Todd of Homer; her sons Bill Kaehr and Andy Stubblefield, also of Homer; and Mike Stubblefield of Albuquerque; sister Caroline Cosentino of Columbia, Md.; son-in-law Leif Gustafson of Homer; and brother-in-law Sal Cosentino of Columbia, Md.

Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of Homer, P.O. Box 4147, Homer, AK 99603.
