A memorial service for Carol Humbyrd (Courtney Pacillo) will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Homer Elks Lodge.

Homer Animal Friends seeks volunteers for Strut Your Mutt on Saturday. Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, distribute prizes, monitor games and as crossing guards during the walk. Registration starts at 10 a.m. and games run until 1 p.m. Even if you have only an hour to spare, please consider helping at this fun event. The Kachemak Bay Birders' First Saturday birding trip will be on Saturday down the Diamond Creek Trail. Meet in the parking lot at Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m. to car pool or at the trail head at 9. Sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate attire are recommended. Bring binoculars. Call trip leader Michael Craig at 235-0631 for more information. There is no charge and everyone is welcome.

Homer Garden Club's annual plant sale will be 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Homer City Hall parking lot on Pioneer and Kachemak Way. The sale features annuals, aprons, perennials, totes, shrubs, houseplants, trees, gardening books, berry bushes, and, for the first time, peonies. Club members grow most of these plants in their own gardens, so the plants are already ideally suited for this area. Knowledgeable members are there to answer questions and share experience.

The R.E.C. Room, a youth resource and enrichment co-op for youth ages 12-18, is open 2-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. This multi-purpose facility, located at 3957 Nielsen Circle, offers games, wifi, computers, snacks and information about health and safety, jobs, classes, recreational activities, volunteer opportunities and more. Pier One Theatre Skills Conservatory for ages 10-14 begins June 6 at the Mariner Theatre. Applications and information are available at www.pieronetheatre.org or by calling 235-7333. Auditions for the summer production will be held June 15 and 16 and are open to actors over age 10.
