The Homer softball team defeated host Kodiak 14-1 last Thursday and 17-9 on Friday to end the Northern Lights Conference regular season. The Lady Mariners' 14-5 overall, 9-1 league record puts them in the No. 1 seed in the conference. Hannah LaRue pitched Thursday's game for a no hitter in the six inning game. LaRue also led the team on Friday with two three-run home runs. Friday's game went just three innings due to the time limit. Brooke Devaney and Kayla Hutt each had three RBIs for Homer. Devaney had a triple, while Hutt had a double. The games were played in the rain and on a puddled field. "We knew we had to win these games in order to have a better record than Soldotna," said second-baseman Miranda Beach. The Stars end the season seeded No. 2 behind the Mariners. Both teams are going to State this weekend where the competition from the Southeast teams will be in full force. "We feel confident. We are a good team with good athletes. The Southeast teams are good, but we are ready for a rematch," said Beach. Last year the Lady Mariners came in second place at State, losing only to Ketchikan and Sitka. This year, the seven graduating seniors are looking for a first-place finish. Beach said, "We are hoping this year we will stay strong all the way to the end."
