Help to fishermen: Iliamna bridge on west side of inlet reopens early

STAFF REPORT

Despite record snowfall and challenging conditions, the Williamsport to Pile Bay Road- Iliamna River Bridge No. 2137 was repaired and opened 15 days earlier than anticipated on Saturday.

The bridge provides an important link for fishing boats making their way to the Bristol Bay fishing grounds, with fishermen traveling from Naknek to Homer and back using this route. It saves fishermen time, money and provides a safer passage through protected waters. The alternative would be taking boats around False Pass through more turbulent water.

Repairs to the bridge were slated to be completed by June 10. However, recognizing the bridge's importance, Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities worked closely with the contractor, including an incentive for timely competition, according to a press release from the state.

The contract was awarded to Southwest Alaska Contractors, LLC of Anchorage in the amount of $613,790. They replaced broken reinforcement chords on the bridge which had forced lower maximum load limits since October.
