'Superior' students perform at state

The Homer High School band and choir recently competed in the Alaska State Solo/Ensemble Festival by merit of achieving a "superior rating" at the district level solo/ensemble festival. "This is an adjudicated event representing the finest student musicians in the state," said Mark Robinson, HHS choral director. In addition, the combined grade point average for the 24 HHS students was the highest in the state, earning the academic award for 2012 ASAA State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

Receiving a superior rating were Akane Fujimura, Herman Hannan, Lauren Cashman, Sam Reinert, Lance Cowen, Cruz Morey, Owen Duffy, Rachel Hannan, John Walsworth, Cayenna Anderson and Joseph Cardoza.

Performing duets were Rachel Hannan and Herman Hannan, and Mariah Stuart and Drew Raymond.

Performing in ensembles were the HHS Women's Ensemble of eight students and the HHS Men's Ensemble of seven students. Nominated for Command Performance (best of the best): HHS Men's Ensemble, second runner up; John Walsworth, first runner-up.

Chosen for Command Perfor- mance: Joseph Cardoza.
