South Peninsula Hospital is offering the upcoming training opportunities: BLS Healthcare Provider CPR class on Friday from 8 a.m.-noon for $75 and first aid class from 1-5 p.m. on Friday for $50. To register or for more information, call the hospitals Education Department at 235-0258.

In honor of Better Speech and Language Month, the hospitals Pediatric Therapy Services will offer free speech and language screenings the entire month of May. If you are concerned about your childs intelligibility, academic success or social skills, this is an excellent opportunity to receive feedback on how to support your childs communication development. In recognition of National Osteoporosis Education and Awareness Month, the hospital is offering a $100 discount on bone density scans during May. This 30-minute test identifies people who have or are at risk for developing osteoporosis, and is recommended for women older than 50 and individuals with a family history of osteoporosis. A Stroke Awareness Forum will be sponsored by the South Peninsula Hospital Speech/Language Department on Thursday, May 31, from 1-2 p.m. at the Homer Senior Center. The forum is free and open to the public. For more information contact SPH Speech/Language Pathology at 235-0370. About 795,000 Americans will suffer a stroke this year, yet most people in the United States cannot identify stroke warning signs or risk factors. Many strokes some studies indicate that up to 80 percent can be prevented through risk factor management. The public is invited to this forum to learn about the warning signs of stroke, risk factors, prevention and the importance of early treatment.
