Ms fielding falls short, hitting strong

Though the view from the Mariners' home baseball field can't be beat, Homer had a hard time defending their home turf in the past week.

The mown-grass M behind the plate was crowded with students and the sunny sidelines lined with adult supporters for the Ms' home opener last Thursday against Palmer. Fans saw big scoring from both sides, though Palmer edged out Homer 20-19.

Homer played to a 9-6 loss last Saturday in Houston.

On Monday back at home, the boys gave up more than 20 unearned runs to Soldotna on the way to a 26-7 loss.

Head Coach Lary Kuhns said physical and psychological setbacks have diminished the team's confidence, they do still know how to play baseball.

"Take away the errors we're still a really good team, but unfortunately errors are part of the game," Kuhns said.

The Ms had seven errors total for the season before the last four games, when they averaged more than that per game.

They lost to Kenai Tuesday night, 18-8.

Their last regular-season games are against Kodiak tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. (JV 4 p.m.) and Wasilla at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (JV 11 a.m.) at the top field at Homer High.
