DASH diet author visits Homer

Marla Heller, author of "The DASH Diet Action Plan," a book based on the Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension Diet, will offer a free community presentation at the South Peninsula Hospital Training Center, 203 W. Pioneer Ave., at 6 p.m. May 26. The diet was developed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and is proven to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and improve insulin sensitivity, Derotha Ferraro, SPH public relations director, said in a press release issued Monday.

A nationally recognized author and educator, Heller was diagnosed with high blood pressure in May 2003. Since that time, she has lowered her blood pressure by following the DASH diet and exercising. Heller holds a master's of science degree in human nutrition and dietetics from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she completed doctoral course work in public health. She is currently a registered dietician with the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.
