Homer Mariner Cassidy Soitsman competes in the triple jump finals Saturday at the Region III Track and Field Championships at Palmer High School.

The small Mariner track and field team competed at the Region III meet in Palmer last weekend and proved their talent despite their small size.

Four of Homer's light foots qualified for the State meet in Fairbanks this weekend. It's the biggest group Head Coach Bill Steyer has taken to State.

Senior Travis Smith and sophomore Tayla Cabana will each be competing in the long jump. Smith also is the first alternate for the 200M, and currently holds the top six jumps in the state.

Junior Mark McGregor will be competing in the 110M hurdles in Fairbanks, and sophomore Cassidy Soistman will go for the triple jump.

A true testament of Homer's merit, out of the 16 athletes in the girls final long jump event, the Lady Mariners came in the top eight.

Regardless of the victories or losses in Fairbanks this weekend, the team is already celebrating with the knowledge that a new high school track is coming their way this summer.
