Barbara Hitch Anderson

Barbara Hitch Anderson, 91, born in Hobson, Mont., on March 25, 1921, completed her earthly journey on May 10, 2012, in Homer.

The daughter of D.N. and Rhoda Hitch, she grew up on a ranch with her four siblings. After completing high school, she joined the U.S. Marine Corps and worked in the motor pool as a truck driver. Later she earned her teaching degree from Montana State University. In 1949, she moved to Petersburg, Alaska, to teach high school, and later taught math and science at Anchorage High School.

She met and married Arthur Anderson in 1955 in Anchorage, where they raised four children. They spent most summers at their cabin in Hope, and eventually settled in Cooper Landing.

Barbara was well known for her immaculate gardens, her involvement in community organizations, and her dedication to family and church. Barbara and Art were co-founders of Westminster Presbyterian Church (Jewel Lake Parish), and attended Abbott Loop Chapel and Hope Christian Church. She also was an accomplished photographer, and a good neighbor everywhere she lived.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her three brothers and one sister.

She is survived by her children: Coleman Anderson of Corpus Christi, Texas; Rhoda Roedl of Homer; John Anderson of Homer; Kevin Anderson of Pittstown, N.J.; their spouses, 16 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, in Hope at Hope Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Hope and Sunrise Historical Society, P.O. Box 88, Hope, AK 99605 or the Hope Christian Church (c/o Charles Fultz, P.O. Box 84, Hope, AK 99605.
