Community cleaned up
Dear Editor,

A record number of bags of trash were collected on Homer Community Clean Up Day on May 4. More than 500 bags were entered for prize consideration, so much that the huge Dumpster had to be emptied midway into the day to make room for more. Community pride was obviously running high on that sunny day on Kachemak Bay, since as a comparison only 201 bags were entered in 2001.

The day could not have happened without the many helping hands of the volunteer trash collectors as well as the sponsors. Peninsula Sanitation donated the Dumpster and $300 in prize money. Kenai Peninsula Borough provided complimentary trash bags, Kachemak Bay Rotary provided staffing of headquarters, GCI provided the $100 cash prize for beach clean up, GCI, Wells Fargo and First National Bank Alaska provided prizes for kids, and Kachemak Bay Lions Club, Pepsi and Coca-Cola provided refreshments.

Thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors who made this a record-breaking Clean Up Day!
