Performance on the beach
Bishop's Beach will become the subject as well as the setting for a dance and performance art work by nationally recognized dancer Brian Jeffery of Chicago and University of Alaska dance program coordinator Jill Flanders Crosby on Saturday, June 1. The site-specific dance will address the history and use of Bishop's Beach and will be performed from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The performance is free, open to all, and sponsored by the Homer Council on the Arts and the Bunnell Street Gallery. Gael Murakami, an Alaska artist known for her watercolor landscapes, will present a workshop in Homer on May 31-June 2. The workshop, titled "Landscape Composition and Technique," will include a discussion of design principles and various "plein aire" equipment options as well as hands-on exercises and critiques. Murakami's class will be held from 7-9 p.m. the first day and 9:30-4:30 the following days. Cost is $135 and a 10 percent discount on tuition available for Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society members. Pier One camp deadline
Deadline for applications for all sessions of Pier One Theatre Camp is Saturday, May 18. Applications are available at Homer Community Schools office at Homer High School, Etude Music Studio, the Homer Council on the Arts or by calling Pier One at 235-7333.
The annual fund-raiser "Grand Inspirations," is set for Sunday. The event includes a cruise to the Kachemak Bay Wilderness Lodge to have lunch, followed by an acoustic folk concert by Andy Baker, desserts, drinks and an art auction featuring get-away packages and locally produced art. The cruise starts at 11 a.m. when the Rainbow Connection departs from the Homer Harbor and concludes with the return trip arriving back around 6 p.m. Tickets are $100, everything included. Kahumoku crosses Bay
In addition to last week's performance, George Kahumoku, Jr., will visit Seldovia this week. He will present a slack-key guitar workshop and Nancy Sweeney will teach a hula workshop on Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Susan B. English School in Seldovia. Kahumoku will perform at 7:30 p.m. that night at the school.
