Track and Field girls take fourth, boys fifth in borough

Four freshmen and sophomore Mariner girls earned Homer fourth place at the borough meet last Friday and Saturday in Nikiski. A team of 10 Homer boys placed fifth of the eight teams represented.

Head Coach Bill Steyer called it an impressive meet for the small team.

"There were lots of terrific performances by our athletes," he said.

Sophomore Diane Frank's third and sixth place finishes in the long jump and the 100-meter dash helped propel the girls' team forward. Cassidy Soistman, Tayla Cabana and Casey Farrell had solid individual performances. The girls also took third in the 4x200 relay.

The boys' 4x400 relay (Dylan Faulkner, Mitch Wyatt, Kyle Austin and Justice Sky) also finished third. Wyatt edged out Seward's Andrew Buchanan for first place in the 300-meter hurdles. A second-place finish by Riley Christiansen in the long jump, a third-place finish by Mark McGregor and fourths by Hoss Frank and Dan Adickes led the boys' scoring.

Most of the Homer track team will attend the regional meet at Skyview Friday and Saturday.
