Bike to Work Week offers more than just a reason to bike to work

Homer Cycling Club recognizes Bike to Work Week with events May 16-20. The club sponsors "nergizer booths" at WKFL Park 7:30-9 a.m. on May 16 and 20, where bicyclists can stop by for complimentary coffee, juice and snacks, as well as bike commuting logs and a chance to participate in a survey about bicycling in the Homer area.

A bicycle movie festival will be held at 6 p.m. May 17 at the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center. Several short movies highlighting different aspects of bicycles as transportation and recreation will be shown.

There will be a community ride in town on May 20, rolling out at 5:30 p.m. from WKFL Park. Helmets are mandatory and the pace will allow all levels to participate. The ride ends at the Beluga Lake Lodge in time for the Cycling Club's first annual meeting, to be held at 6:30 at Beluga Lake Lodge.

The club's purpose is "to improve conditions for bicyclists at the local level, to establish bike routes and mountain bike trails, host group rides, organize events such as races and promote bicycling as environmentally friendly, healthy and enjoyable." Anyone who is interested is welcome to join. Monthly meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday in Room B103 of Homer High School.
