Student news

Jacob Bowler and Caitlin Davis, both of Homer, were among 2,270 graduates of the University of Alaska Anchorage class of 2011. Bowler received a bachelor of business adminisration in economics and graduated magna cum laude. Davis received a bachelor of arts in psychology with a minor in philosophy.

Homer High School senior Jonathan Jester recently received word of his acceptance at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Founded in 1876, the academy is located in New London, Conn.

Chapman School

Through May 13: Swimming, Kate Kuhns Aquatic Center, grades 2-3.

May 14: Rummage and bake sale, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Rent a table for $10 and keep the profits or donate them to the Chapman parent group for the purchase of sports uniforms. Donations can be dropped off at the Chapman office. For more information, contact Sherree Drake at 299-8808 or Tanya Shafer at 399-7523.

Note: Connections is enrolling new and returning students for the 2011-2012 school year. Please call to make an enrollment appointment. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1.

Fireweed Academy, Grades K-2

May 13: Karen Hornaday picnic and play day, noon-2:30 p.m.

May 17: Big Fireweed here for dress rehearsal of play, 1:30 p.m.

May 18: "Welcome to the Jungle" play performance, potluck and second-grade promotion, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

May 19: Pajama Day.

May 20: Homestead hike with Big Fireweed.

McNeil Canyon Elementary School

As they do each year, McNeil Canyon sixth-graders are selling Fritz Creek Garden certificates through May 16. The certificates are available from sixth-graders, at the school office or at the Homer Bookstore. The certificates cost $20 and are redeemable for $20, with Fritz Creek Garden owner Rita Jo Shoultz donating a portion of the proceeds to the class.

Programs

Faith Christian Preschool is now registering children 3-5 years old for the 2011-2012 preschool year. It is located at Faith Lutheran Church, 1000 Soundview Avenue, across from West Homer Elementary School. For options available, call 235-7600.

Homer Head Start is accepting applications for 3- to 5-year-olds for the 2011-2012 year. All are welcome. Center-based and home-based programs. For information, call 235-4322.
