Cassidy Soistman competes in the finals of the triple jump Saturday during the Kenai Peninsula Borough track and field meet at Skyview High School in Soldotna.

The Mariners' Track and Field team showed up to the borough meet small in numbers, but left giving Homer a big name. Homer came in fourth place overall against seven teams, an improvement from last year's records at Boroughs.

"We had a terrific performance for the small team we had. Lots of finishes in the finals and best times for many of the athletes," said Head Coach Bill Steyer.

Lone senior on the team, Travis Smith received second place for both the 100M and long jump events. This was Smith's first time competing in the long jump in his high school career.

In the 110M hurdles Junior Mark McGegor also received second place and maintained in the top five in the 300M hurdles after tripping over the last hurdle.

Sophomore Cassidy Soistman is currently the top regional triple jumper. As a freshman, Soistman went to state in the triple jump and is expected to go again this year.

"At State the competition gets much more stiff and usually that is where experienced athletes do well. Cassidy is a solid competitor and will do well under the circumstances," said Steyer.

Long distance runners Crystal Crane, Casey Farrell, and Melanie Mastolier also had notable weekends. Crane received fourth place in the 400M, a close event between Soistman and Crane. Crane was in the lead for most of the race until Soistman passed Crane in the last leg, finishing with a difference of 19 seconds.

Farrell and Mastolier both placed third in the one mile and two mile events respectively, personal bests for both.

This weekend the team heads to Regions where placing will be important to qualify for State.
