WHE mathematicians score at borough bowl

A long four-hour bus ride from Homer to Seward didn't slow Homer's young math wizards last week. They were part of 53 teams competing in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Math Bowl held at Seward Elementary School.

West Homer Elementary School's team, "Welcome to Wump World," claimed first place, thanks to the efforts of team captain Joe Ravin and team members Andie Sonnen, Clark Bolin and Wynand Strydom. West Homer's team "Mental Monkeys," with captain Douglas Dean and team members Levi King, Marissa Geissler and Ali McCarron, took third place. In second was a team from Kaleidoscope Charter School in Kenai.

"The kids enthusiastically worked their tails off on math most of the day," said WHES math instructor Suzanne Haines. "They were supportive of each other, worked exceptionally well as teams and received glowing compliments from a proctor about their behavior, attitudes and work ethics."
