Swimming sponsors needed
Dear Editor,

Have you ever wondered why you hear so much news about swimming from a community that sits beside chilly Kachemak Bay? One reason swimming thrives here in Homer is Kachemak Swim Club.

KSC is a nonprofit unincorporated youth organization whose sole purpose is educational. Over 130 children ages 6 through 18 participate in our program for both competitive and recreational swimming. KSC provides an opportunity for social and emotional development that promotes confidence, positive self-esteem, good sportsmanship and team spirit. Thousands of hours of volunteer time from our swimmer's families go into putting on a season of swim meets and practices and to keep the business of KSC running smoothly.

Recently, coaches and teachers in our community have come to our board meetings to tell us that there are young aspiring swimmers who would benefit from being involved with KSC, but whose families cannot afford the costs involved. It was decided that we would pursue the concept of a scholarship program for Kachemak Swim Club. We are hoping to find families and service organizations in the area that would be willing to sponsor a swimmer's monthly fees for a period of six months. These fees run about $50 per month for a beginning swimmer, including due, basic gear and meet fees.

If you or an organization that you belong to would be willing to lend financial help and introduce a young person to the lifelong sport of swimming, please contact me.
