FireWise kids' art contest is open

Kenai Peninsula children can enter the FireWise children's art contest. Young artists are encouraged to create posters on the theme "Fires in the Forest and Houses in the Forest: What Can We Do?"

Sponsored by the Alaska Division of Forestry and the Kenai Peninsula Borough, the contest is open to children in grades kindergarten through fifth.

Three categories are open: Little Spotters, kindergarten-first grade; Little Jumpers, second and third grade; and Junior Hot Shots, fourth and fifth grade.

Winners in each category receive public recognition, and posters will be used in murals, educational materials or as placemats. Grand-prize winners win an iPod Shuffle.

The deadline is May 16, with winners announced May 23. Artwork can be between 8.5-by-11-inches and 16-by-22-inches and on stiff paper or cardboard. Art should include the artist's full name, age, grade level, school, student's address and student's phone number in the upper left corner.
