A line of gold-jerseyed Mariners defend against Kenai's penalty kick in the second half of their first conference game Saturday at Homer High School soccer field. The kick flew over the goal. Homer went on to score twice and win the game.

After warming up the home turf with a 7-1 win over Hutchison High School Thursday, the Mariner boys soccer team Saturday defeated Kenai Central for the first time in recent memory.

Homer Head Coach Warren Waldorf said Ms haven't beat Kenai in the four years he's been coaching; most of the boys have never been on a team that's claimed a victory over the Kardinals.

"This is a big deal for them. Things changed. We just won our first game in the south division Northern Lights Conference," Waldorf said after the game Saturday.

Though Hutchison is comparable in size to Homer High, the Mariners' play was more evenly matched against much-larger Kenai.

Kenai took the lead 17 and a half minutes into the game, and held on until two minutes before the 40-minute half ended. On an assist by Carson Duggar, Robin Glosser netted a beautiful shot to tie the game.

Kenai missed a penalty kick shortly before Kyle Wisner brought the Mariners up 2-1, 30 minutes into the second half.

Duggar knocked one in right before the game ended 3-1 for the Ms.

"These are the 11 best athletes we've had on the field in 15 years," Waldorf said. "People should be encouraged to come out and watch."

In their season debut, the Mariners junior varsity team beat Kenai 2-1. Sam Reinert and Jake Worsfold scored goals.

"It was a great game," wrote Coach Sue Rennolds in an e-mail.

Homer shutout Skyview at Skyview Tuesday with 14-0 and 7-0 wins. Mariners varsity and junior varsity played the same Skyview team, which recently lost one third of its soccer roster.

There will be three chances to see the Ms varsity team in action this weekend. They face 2010 southern division winner Nikiski today, Colony Friday and Palmer on Saturday.

Boys face Nikiski at 4 p.m. tonight, Colony at 6 p.m. tomorrow, and Palmer at 10 a.m. Saturday. JV plays at 4 p.m. tomorrow and noon on Saturday.

They'll all be in Seward on Tuesday and face Soldotna at home on Wednesday.
