May 17, 1958- April 27, 2011

Longtime Alaskan and Hesketh Island resident, Peggy Lynn Baker, 52, died April 27, 2011, near Soldotna, after a battle with cancer.

A celebration of her life was held April 29 at the Birch Ridge Community Church south of Soldotna. Pastor Brian Wahl officiated.

Peggy was born May 17, 1958, in La Porte, Ind. She graduated from Ball State University with a master's degree in education.

She moved to Alaska in 1986, and was a teacher in Atka, Hooper Bay, Pilot Point and Barrow before retiring in May 2009. She also taught at La Porte High School in La Porte, Ind. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, birds, kayaking and sitting on the deck at Hesketh, near Homer.

Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Bill Baker. She is survived by her husband, Gary Nelson of Hesketh Island; her mother, Pat Baker of Conner, Mont.; and brother, Brian Baker of Marne, Mich.
