The 2012 Commencement is 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Homer High Schools Mariner Theater. The public is invited to recognize achievements of masters, bachelor of arts, associate and GED graduates.

The commencements keynote speaker will be Dr. Gretchen Bersch, University of Alaska Anchorage professor emerita and recent inductee into the Alaska Womens Hall of Fame. The KBC 2012 Commencement Student Speaker will be Valedictorian Charlene Flyum.

University of Alaska Regent Fuller Cowell and UAA Provost Michael Driscoll will confer degrees.

An informational meeting on a new UAA-KBC training program in Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) is noon Wednesday at KBC.

In conjunction with Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, KBC presents a public panel, The Role of Environmental Journalism in Todays World, with Mark Obmascik, author of The Big Year, author Nancy Lord, and journalist Tom Kizzia, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 11. Panelists will discuss writing about the local environment and the connections between media, environment and society. Michael Hawfield, KBC assistant professor of history, moderates.

The deadline for early registration for the Kachemak Bay Writers Conference with a reduced registration fee is Friday.

Registration has started for June workshops: Watercolor Painting with Jan Peyton, June 15-18, and Plants/Flora of Kachemak Bay with Ed Berg, June 16-July 14.

The national GED exam-testing program will soon become computer-based with a consequent increase in fees. If you have not finished your GED testing, do it now. Call Kachemak Bay Campus at 235-1602 for an appointment.

Going to KPC or KBC this fall for a degree? Apply for fall 2012 scholarships now. Several scholarship applications have just been released.The KBC campus-based scholarships, the Homer Chamber of Commerce scholarship and the Homer Rotary scholarship applications are open.
